Reading

Fluency  Reads
One of our reading focuses will be fluency, the rate at which we read with close to no errors. Passages will be paired with student’s current reading level, & will contain decodable phonics skills, basic sight word recognition, & word study skills. Consistent sight word practice & reading the same passage multiple times will help ensure that readers are prepared. You will be amazed at how quickly your child’s reading level, fluency rate, & confidence will grow & improve with your support.
Curriculum
In Guided Reading, students will be grouped with classmates at similar reading levels for small group instruction that is specific to their learning needs. Our Read Aloud time exposes students to a variety of texts, authors, & genres. Class favorites, silly stories, chapter book series, & more will be read. For Independent Reading, students will silently take time to read & explore on their own. Shared Reading allows the class to share the roles of reading & exploring, finding information & text evidence, comprehending, etc. We will also engage in daily Comprehension Checks.
Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader is a computer based program that helps monitor independent reading practice & comprehension. Students can choose books at their individual reading levels, ensuring success on the practice quizzes. Doing well on practice quizzes earns us AR points, which can be traded in for prizes at school. Students can take AR quizzes on books read at home, at school, with the class, in the library, etc. Our goal is for students to be able to learn & grow at their own pace, choosing books that are at their reading level & enjoyable for them.
SW Challenge
We will have a Sight Word Challenge for students who are ready to learn more than our featured words per week. We will focus, not only on isolated sight words, but also on fluency phrases containing these words. When your child confidently knows their list by sight & is able to fluently read the paired phrases, they will be tested on their list. Please sign/initial your child’s list in the box at the bottom & return it to school to let me know your child is ready. Your child can continue working their way through over 1,000 words & phrases within 10 booklets. Each booklet passed will earn your child a prize. I am encouraging students to develop intrinsic motivation while working toward an overall end goal. Our goal is for first graders to know these words quickly by sight & be able to spell them correctly, by the end of the school year.
Book It
Book It bookmarks will come home at the beginning of each month. Star each night you read for 20 minutes to turn in at the end of the month for a free Pizza Hut pizza. Students who turn in their bookmarks will also get an additional prize for reading progress.
